The Story Behind This Blog

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hi Viewers! My name is Emily, and I am a senior at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. I am majoring in Philosophy and double minoring in Public Policy with a concentration in Education and the Writing Colleagues Program. Next year I will be a doctoral student at the University of Rochester, working to obtain a PhD in Teaching, Curriculum, and Change.

It is my belief that language is at the heart of learning. I believe an effective use of language can shape a child’s learning environment and that children of all socioeconomic backgrounds can grow as individuals. I am pursuing a doctorate in research education, because I want to explore and take part in research targeted towards understanding the relationship between the social identities of gender, race and class, and literacy practices. This will then enable me to enter a career that addresses the academic literacy development of linguistically and culturally diverse students attending public schools.

I have created this blog because I have just finished my honors project titled, Metaphor: Making the Abstract Concrete and Visual. I have posted sections of it here on WordPress, and I would love some feedback. My project is broken down into three parts: First, I am looking into language and human evolution; second, I am looking at communication beyond the literal level; and third, I am looking at the role of metaphor in the classroom setting. Again, I would love feedback from anyone who finds this topic interesting. Share your thoughts, give suggestions, any contribution is appreciated!

Enjoy!
